Our Family DIY Basement Painting Project

my husband did all the framing himself over the past two years

Last week was our kid's spring break. While many families went on vacation to sunny Florida for the week, our family was busy painting the walls of our basement. I know what fun.

We had a contractor put up the drywall the week before, so we could do the rest.

It was amazing to see the transformation each day.

This closet under our steps will be put to good use. I am looking forward to putting seasonal clothes here soon. Yeah!

My guys painting the walls and ceiling.

Jordan was so willing to pitch in and help us paint. He didn't want to take a break. He actually worked harder than his older brother and sister.

Later in the week he went over to our neighbors house to play with his friends. I guess he thought that was enough work for him.

I wanted to share a secret I discovered on Google. Several years ago our neighbor gave us three five gallons of paint that was left from the previous owners. My husband to my dismay, was more than willing to take the gallons of paint. Well, we opened them up find out they were baby blue, pastel green and a purple. I wanted a taupe or off white for the walls. I looked online to see if you could change baby blue paint to a taupe. Would you believe if you added peach to the gallon you will get that color. We also added some of the pastel green and some red to get that effect.

My husband and I went to Home Depot to ask an associate his opinion. He didn't know that you could mix these colors together either. We purchased a gallon of peach at the store. He told me to add a cup at a time until we get the color we want.

The middle color is what we used on the walls

It is not as dark as taupe, but maybe more of a sand color. However, it still is in that family of colors.

I wish you could have seen the entire family disagreeing on how to mix the colors together. Everyone had an opinion on what to do.

Amazing about mixing your own colors. I don't think you could've thought up a better "team building" event that Painting the basement.

Wow, you are a risk taker mixing all that paint! I would have taken the easy way out and bought the color at the store! Just shows how creative you are....which we already know!!

That is useful information! My sister and I were talking about buying some "oops" paint the other day. I love before and after pics.

Wow! What a transformation! It will be great to see the finished product! And way to be thrifty and use up that old paint in a new way...turned out great!

I'm always gunshy about mixing paint shades, but these look great. I think I need to be more adventurous with my paints! :)

That looks like a lot of work, but well worth it!
